Music Industry Mentoring Program! Applications back open!

Applications have now closed for Round 3 of the Music Industry Mentoring Program.

With support from The Ian Potter Foundation, this intake of the Music Industry Mentoring program will support 7 young people with opportunities to be placed and mentored in some of Australia’s biggest music companies. 
 

This program will give you the opportunity to develop skills, confidence, and networks across a range of streams including event management, technical production, artist management and programming. 
 

The Music Industry Mentoring program aims to respond to ongoing sector-wide skills shortages and declining enrolments across music and arts in both secondary and higher education – creating a pipeline for skilled industry practitioners and providing both young people and workplaces with a framework that ensures workplace readiness and meaningful pathways into the contemporary music sector. 
 

Industry partners providing mentoring opportunities for this intake of the program include DarkLab, Live Nation Entertainment, Mellen Events, Moshtix, Queensland Music Festival, Select Music and UNIFIED Music Group with opportunities across Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. 
 

Successful applicants will be matched with a workplace mentor who will provide guidance and support throughout the workplace learning program. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in regular online workshops to connect with and learn from other young people throughout the program. 
 

While this volunteer program is open to all young people aged 18 – 25 based anywhere within Australia, priority access will be given to First Nations young people, young people of colour, young people from low-income households, young people with a disability and LGBTQIA+ young people. To cover any expenses incurred, all program participants will receive a once-off honorarium paid at the commencement of the program.

+ DarkLab – Volunteer Music Programming Assistant, Hobart

The participant will learn from DarkLab’s Music Programming team –including the Music Director, Music Program Manager and Music Program Coordinator; supporting the administrative operations of Altar Bar, the Odeon Theatre, In The Hanging Garden and Dark Mofo.

+ Live Nation Entertainment – Volunteer Venue Assistant, Melbourne

This opportunity is available within the Live Nation venues team, learning across both of their venues in Melbourne (Palais Theatre and Festival Hall). This role will support the venue management team to ensure the effective, efficient, and productive running of the venue’s event calendar, and will include learning experiences both in the planning of events during typical office hours, and the delivery of events in the evenings.

+ Mellen Events – Volunteer Event Ticketing Assistant, Perth

This participant will be actively involved in learning about Ticketing Operations and Delivery with Mellen Events. They will assist in the building of tickets for events, coordinating ticket onsales, administrative tasks, event day planning and delivery for ticketing and front of house. This role will learn about and assist with tasks that maintain the efficiency and success of Mellen Events' activities.

+ Moshtix – Volunteer Marketing Assistant, Adelaide

You will have the opportunity to learn from the Moshtix Marketing team, assisting with the delivery of marketing campaigns across Moshtix channels. As the Volunteer Marketing Assistant your day-to-day may include learning about scheduling content across marketing channels, copywriting, proof-reading and maintaining content for web, newsletters, infographics, digital and print banners, social media and creative marketing campaigns.

+ QMF – Volunteer Tour and Production Assistant, Brisbane

The Volunteer Tour and Production Assistant supports the Head of Production, Technical and Logistics, and the Tour Production Coordinator in sourcing and coordinating touring logistics, liaison and coordination of contractor and supplier requirements, event schedules and administrative logistics to ensure efficient delivery of trails and events and positive customer experience. This will include tour coordination, contractor and supplier coordination and production coordination

This participant will work with booking agent, Brandon Wade at Select Music, providing administrative & operational support required for the smooth running and execution of tours and one-off shows. Brandon’s roster includes artists such as Pacific Avenue, Hayley Mary, Keli Holiday, Telenova, Vacations, and many more.

+ UNIFIED Music Group – Volunteer Artist Management Assistant, Melbourne

This is an opportunity to work with the entire Australian UNIFIED Artist Management team who represent Ocean Alley, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, The Rions and Boy & Bear. You will learn how UNIFIED Music Group support their artists’ careers. Based in Melbourne, you will be paired up with each of our artist management teams across our Melbourne and Sydney offices and will get to experience first-hand learning supporting the day-to-day running of each artists’ business.

+ What are the requirements?

All participants must:

• Be aged between 18 – 25 years old at the time of the program

• Be able to attend all dates of the in-person program in-person

• Be able to attend all online briefing meetings and trainings

• Be involved as an active participant of the program until the end of May 2025.

+ Who can apply?

While the program is open to all young people aged 18 – 25 based anywhere within Australia, priority access will be given to:

+ What will I gain from participating in this program?

As part of the program, you will gain substantial work experience, practical training, mentorship, and networking opportunities. You will refine your skills, knowledge, understanding and confidence in working in the contemporary music industry.

+ How much does the program cost?

Participation in the program is free.

All participants will receive an honorarium to help cover travel to and from workplaces, meals and other expenses. This honorarium is not linked to the number of volunteer hours and is not subject to any reimbursement obligations.

All participants living outside the city where the end-of-program celebration will be held will have travel and accommodation arranged and paid for. This end of program celebration will be held in May/June 2025.

+ Where does the program take place?

The program takes place across Australia. Each opportunity has different locations listed, with some based in one location while others take place across multiple locations within Australia.

+ What makes a strong application?

Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate their commitment to a career in the contemporary music industry through:

• Evidence of pro-actively pursuing training, practical experience or work relevant to the opportunity you are applying for
• Current interests and future career goals aligned to the opportunity you are applying for

+ What skills and experience should I show in my application?

Each opportunity has a different set of skills you will learn. Take a careful look at the dot points listed in the “About The Opportunity” section of the opportunity you are applying to.

Strong applicants will be able to show some training, practical or work experience that shows experience with some of these skills, and that aligns generally to the organisation and role.

Strong applicants will also have a sense of their future career goals and be able to provide a clear argument as to how learning the skills outlined in the opportunity description will help them achieve these goals.
